What was William Hobson's view of the treaty?

I think hisview on t he treaty was that he didn't want to same to happen to the Maori as what happen to the Aborigines. So he decided to make come up with a treaty so the Maori could have rights and save some of there land. I think he had this view because he realised that what they were doing to the aborigines was unfair and sad as heaps of families got split up and destroyed because of them (Europeans). But this view is not sure as i am not William Hobson myself but that's what i have thought it is from gathering information about it.

Why did the pakeha want the land?

The Maori fought the early European settlers of NZ predominately because the settlers where unfairly taking the Maori peoples land off them as the Maori believed the Europeans were wanting to share the land, however the settlers wanted to purchase the land outright. The Maori people soon realised that the settlers did not want to share the land but by this time allot of the land was in the settlers hands. As more settlers came into New Zealand, they began to cheat the Maori people out of their lands using contracts unfair laws and such. Out of all this the Maori land wars began, this was the Maori people fighting for their land. This did not work well for the Maori however, and the outcome wasn't positive for them. Lots of them died, others were jailed etc, then the settlers used the wars as an excuse to 'confiscate' more land. Eventually the Maori people used land marches, strikes and land occupation to, in the end, start to get their land back, or compensation if not possible. Why is any treaty signed?

A treaty is simply an agreement that spells out what each side will do and not do. Countries sign treaties because both sides (all sides) think they will get something they want from it.

What difficulties and tensions arose during the treaty meetings?

The particular issues that arose are contingent on which treaty the treaty meetings were about. However, in general, tensions that arise during treaty negotiation concern the resolution of mutually exclusive interests, such as piece of land that both countries want control of.
