if it was spelt with an 's' it would sound like 'bra-sil' which is very similar to the herb- basil. The Brazilian language contians more proment lettering than English, so more corse souds like v's are put in place. With the 'v' it sounds 'bra-zil' like its meant to sounds. that's like asking why a head is spelt head
