The US spelling of suffix words for some words ending in -EL such as travel and cancel are no longer doubled as in the original British spellings. In some cases, either spelling is acceptable in the US.

US : canceling, canceled, traveling, quarreled, labeling, cruelest, signaling

UK : cancelling, cancelled, travelling, quarrelled, labelling, cruellest, signalling

However compel, excel, propel, rebel and other words still double the final L.
