Absolutely. They are actually more carnivorous than grizzlies are, and if they are hungry enough they will actually stalk humans and hunt them down for food. They are very unpredictable if you are not familiar with bear-Psychology or bear-behaviour. They can climb trees, which is not good if you choose to shimmy up a stout tree to get away from a black bear. And, playing dead will not make a black bear lose interest in you, rather it will think you are a fresh meal and start tearing flesh from your bones. If you meet a black bear, you must prepare for battle with anything you have on hand, be it a stout stick, your backpack, bike, a knife, gun, or feet or fists. But if you meet a black bear and it does not react in defense to you, but simply keeps its eye and ear on you, simply walk/back away slowly away from the bear. If the bear is not reacting to you, then so much the better.most of the time they will only attack if you pose as a threat to them or there cubs

Black bears have a nature that is more on the timid side. They are easily frightened, and their general reaction is to run away when confronted. Contrary to popular belief, mother black bears will not attack when you come across their cubs. This is a grizzly and polar bear trait, not a black bear one. It’s true that there have been black bear attacks on people resulting in injury or death, but this scenario is extremely rare. They shouldn’t be feared in the same way that the larger bears are. Nevertheless, they are wild animals and should be treated as such.
