They can be both. Since there is no one cat, there is no one behavior of cats. Our cats are pretty laid back- we have had them since they were kittens, and they are very snuggly. But some cats are bad natured and will scratch and bite. You SHOULD understand that cats ARE predators, and WILL chase, kill and eat birds and small animals (mice, moles, etc) That is part of being cat.
