no a degu is its own species they are from the same family though Answer: Yes a degu is it's own species :) But they act like a chincilla but look a bit like a gerbil or a squirrel :D lol A degu is not a mix of a rat and a chinchilla but they are in the chinchilla family. I think that degus look like squirrels but smaller and without a bushy tail.
degu
A female degu is commonly referred to simply as a "doe." Degus are small, social rodents native to Chile, and they are known for their playful nature and social behavior. In contrast, a male degu is called a "buck." Both males and females can be kept as pets, typically in pairs or groups to promote social interaction.
The only animal you can cage with Chinchilla's are Degu's but even then there is a long introduction process and they are not guaranteed to get along. Talk to a breeder about how this is done.
There are so many adorable rodents guinea pigs, hamsters, degus, gerbils, chinchillas, rats and mice

Mountain Degu was created in 1844.
A degu is simply a cross between a kangaroo-rat and a gerbil. A kangaroo-rat isn't a kangaroo and a rat, it's just a type of rat; just like a pitbull is a type of dog... not it's own species. It's a member of the rodent family. So if you consider rodents mammals, then yes... it's a mammal.
Degu Debebe was born on 1984-01-01.
Degu's can lose their tails as a form of defense, a degu should NEVER be picked up by it's tail. their tails do not grow back
a degu averagely weighs about 5-8 ounces
Only if you want the degu to be killed and quite possibly eaten.
