If your dog is to be shown and is Kennel Club registered, then look at its Breed Standard to see how many dew claws your dog should have and whether they should be removed. Most breeds are different and some may require the dew claws to be removed. Here is an example of some breeds rules on dew claws:
Beauceron, Briard or Great Pyrenees - Double dew claws on the hind legs and single dew claws on the front legs. Never removed if the dog is to be shown.
Staffordshire Bull Terrier and many other breeds - Usually only single dew claws on front legs and none on hind legs. All removed for showing.
Lundehund/Puffin Hound - Double dew claws on front legs and on back legs. Should have eight in total. Never removed for showing.
Rottweiler and some other breeds - Single dew claws on front legs and sometimes on back legs. Rear dew claws should be removed. Front dew claws not relevant.
I cannot give you every breed's standard on dew claws, but look on the Kennel Club website for other breeds.
You may have heard that they do not have dewclaws, but it depends on the dog. Sometimes they do have rear dewclaws and sometimes they don't. It depends on what genes the dog got from its parents
I tend to look at the structural body shape and size (particularly the ears, tail and abdomen); fur length, colour, and texture; tail length and shape (curled or straight);and I look for unique features like dewclaws, double dewclaws, wrinkled skin, tongue colour, that kind of thing.
Go to a veterinarian to have them removed.
They are used to help hold bones etc. while eating. Some dogs with larger dewclaws use them for better balance when running. Some dogs do not use them at all. It depends on the size of the dog and breed.
AKC standards in breeds are very strict, and the organization has standards about double dew claws. Very few breeds are allowed double dew claws, but one breed in which they are acceptable is the Great Pyrenees.
probably because it dewclaws;)
Yes, dogs have dewclaws, which are the small, vestigial toes located higher up on their legs, similar to the position of our thumbs. Dewclaws can be found on both the front and hind legs of some dog breeds, and they may have a purpose for providing stability during activities such as running and turning. Some breed standards require dewclaws to be removed for certain dog breeds.
Yes, a cur is a term commonly used for a mixed-breed or mongrel dog that does not belong to a specific breed. It is not a specific breed of dog on its own.
No.
Yes, they do unless the owner chooses to remove them.
A Catahoula is a specific breed.
The breed of my dog is a Golden Retriever. I chose this breed because of their friendly and gentle nature, as well as their intelligence and loyalty.
