They can be both. Many reptiles, particularly snakes, help keep populations of rodents and other animals under control, and so are an indispensable asset to farmers. Without snakes many places would face famine. Crocodiles and alligators help clean up carrion from lakes and rivers and help keep their prey populations under control as well. At the same time they can be harmful. Venomous snakes kill thousands of people every year and injure even more as they bite in self-defense. Some large constrictors kill in self defense as well. Crocodilians sometimes attack and kill people who enter their territory and, in some instances, eat them. There have also been a few cases of people being eaten by large snakes and komodo dragons.
No don't do that if you know the reptile is dangerous but if not and its vice versa.
In the lab, and in the field..Herpetologists work with reptiles, many of which are dangerous..The work they do is very beneficial to us, helping to understand the reptiles around us, and even in the developement of antivenen, the antidote made to counteract against venom.
