Yes. Typically in any wild herd there is only one stallion with a harem comprising of 10 to sometimes 50 mares. The only other stallions that could be found in this herd are those young male horses that are too young to be ready to breed any females; these are called colts. Once they have reached sexual maturity or are old enough to leave their mothers, the dominating stallion will chase them away.

There are also herds of stallions, often called bachelor herds, which mainly comprise of young teenage-like stallions that don't have their own females to guard and mate yet. Sometimes there may be an older stallion or two with them, depending on whether that old stallion has been replaced by a younger and stronger male.

Why are mares bossy?

Good question. Mares can be bossy and more difficult to deal with than a gelding. In their wild state, alpha mares run the whole show. They lead the herd and decide where they are going, what they will do when they get there, on so on. The stallions job is to run off other stallions. Stallions will protect their band of mares to the death sometimes. Some mares have what is the equivelent of PMS (pre menstrual syndrom) and their moods can fluxuate with their hormones. This sometimes can be a distraction if you have your horse at a show or competition and she wants to socialize with the boys. Some horse owners don't want to deal with the ups and downs of mares, and they ride geldings, or in lesser cases a stallion. I have 2 mares and I love them. To me they are easier to deal with my gelding, but of course everybody is different and every horse is different.

Can the Bureau of Land Management sell stallions?

They could, but a stallion, especially one that is not a young stallion, is often the hardest type of wild horse to tame, much harder than his offspring or his mares are. In most cases stallions are let go to find more mares to have and produce offspring with.

Are male horses more domminant than females?

As a general rule, most mares get moody when they come in heat. Stallions are also generally as less well-behaved than mares in estrus, mostly because of the fact that their hormones start raging when they smell a female in heat. Geldings on the other hand, are generally the best tempered type of horse out there because they have been castrated and do not have the raging hormone issue going on like mares and stallions do. However, every horse is different. Some mares will be better than some stallions, some stallions will be better than geldings, and some mares will be better than some geldings. It all depends on how they've been socialized and trained that really depicts how well-tempered they can be.

What is an old male horse called?

All male horses are either geldings or stallions. Geldings are male horses/ponies that have been castrated, meaning they cannot breed. Stallions are horses that are not castrated and can breed. Geldings are usually more docile than Stallions that are more aggressive, they tend to act protectively over themselves and other horses (particularly mares) that could be either in their field or (in the case of mares) potential breeding partners. Stallions also become more protective, particularly in the field, if there are pregnant mares or young horses and foals.

What are stallions?

They are male horses...some more dangerous than others Stallions are uncastrated male horses. They are often more excitable and temperamental than geldings and mares. However, with correct training, they can be very docile.

Can a girl ride a stallion?

Yes a girl can ride a stallion, the old wives tales about girls and stallions are false and can be ignored. However you should be at least an intermediate level rider or better as stallions are stronger and more aggressive than mares or geldings and they will challenge you for dominance.

Teaser stallions are used to help?

Teaser stallions are usually smaller than the mares and are used to help get the mare to take to the stallion. This will make the job easier whilst getting the stallion to cover the mare as she will not be so reluctant.

What are horses less than a year old called?

Foals Boys are colts (they become stallions and are often gelded) and girls are fillys (become mares)

Why might seclective breeding be used in horses?

To produce a horse with certain qualities. Example: you have a herd of thoroughbred mares and a pair of thoroughbred stallions at your barn. Some mares in your herd are tall, some are medium height, and sOme are super short for a thoroughbred. Say that you want a fast thoroughbred to race. And your taller mares are faster than all the others, and the taller thoroughbred is faster than the shorter one. So you are obviously are going to breed a tall, fast mare with the tall, fast stallion in hopes of producing a foal with this specific quality. (speed)

Do the horse mate for life?

No, most animals don't stay together after mating. There are animals that do, but it's very rare. In a herd, there will be one stallion and a bunch of mares. This stallion is the only one allowed to mate with these mares until he dies or another stallion steals his herd. So, they do stay together after mating, unless the mare(s) are stolen.

Are stallions dangerous?

Stallions can be more unpredictable and aggressive than geldings or mares due to their natural instincts for breeding and protecting their territory. Proper training, handling, and management are important to ensure the safety of both the stallion and those around him. With the right approach, stallions can be well-behaved and reliable partners.

Do wild mustangs stay in groups?

Yes; even stallions who have been driven from the herd form "bachelor bands" for reasons of protection. A predator is much less likely to attack a herd of horses, than a lone one.
