This is really a question not so much of the value of the unit as of what is meant by the term "dog year". There is no simple answer, because:

• the relationship between dog ageing and human ageing is not linear
• different breeds of dog have different ageing profiles
• there are two conflicting terminologies.

I agree more with the terminology whereby "X year" means the amount a X ages in a year. Going by this, the first year of a dog's life generally equals around 10 human years, whereas from 2 up each extra dog year equals between 4 (smaller breeds) and 7 (larger breeds) human years.
