I had the same question. My vet told me not for 7 days after the pups are born. She said you could remove the smell from the mother and the pups would reject the mother because she didn't have the smell anymore. Its only 7 days, I would say stick through the smell, its better than taking the chance of having hungry puppies.

you usually use a small large or medium (depending on dog size small for small large for large medium for medium) rag but it has to be small but don't clean the babies because mother dogs are usually protective of their pups
