A Ferret will form a very strong bond to it's owner, and if separated, some ferrets will become so depressed, will quit eating and die. As far as protecting it's owner like a dog would, I'm not sure.

Are there ferrets in Illinois?

Yes, there are ferrets in Illinois, but they are not native to the state. Ferrets are domesticated animals and are often kept as pets. However, it's important to note that owning ferrets is regulated in some areas, so potential owners should check local laws and regulations regarding their possession. Wild ferrets, such as the black-footed ferret, are found in other regions of North America but are not present in Illinois.

When should I cage my two ferrets and when should I let them free roam?

Ferrets are not caged animals, but you cage them for their protection. Most ferret owners cage ferrets when they're not at home or unable to supervise them when free roaming. Ferrets need about 4 hours daily time out of their cage in a ferret proofed environment. Ferrets being burrowing animals by nature are subject to crawl and fall asleep into places that can be dangerous and you cannot get them out, like in major appliances, couches, recliners (very dangerous for ferrets). I personally do not cage my ferrets, but keep them in a bedroom totally ferret proofed so they are safe

Can your two ferrets stay together when one gives birth?

It's suggested not to let ferrets stay together when having babies. Most female ferrets are very protective of their babies and need to be isolated about a week prior to birth in a dark, quiet, secluded area so she can prepare a nest. If the ferret feels threatened that her babies may be harmed, she might cannibalize them.
