There is a lot of controversy over silver labs, and there is no proof that they aren't mixes with weirmenieners, as well as no proof that they are. Silver supporters like to claim that tests have been done, but AKC never did any DNA tests, and Dr. Neff was never trying to proof whether they where mutts or not. Also, there is still no way to fully tell a dog's entire genetic make up. Those DNA test kits? Completly inaccurate.
That being said, while you can not say with certainty that they are purebred labs they can still be registered with AKC. They are, however, a disqualification, and it is highly frowned upon to breed them. So don't expect to be showing him or putting him up for stud any time soon.
