Yes, cats can bite, but most do not. Cats will bite if:

  1. they are very frightened and you try to pick them up
  2. you ignored their "cat body language" that told you "I am annoyed / irritated."
  3. the cat is ill -- For example, a urinary stone or blocked urinary tract is very painful for a cat. But they don't know or understand pain, so they will bite even their owner.
  4. the cat is injured and in pain
  5. the cat feels threatened
  6. you aren't cat friendly
  7. you step on it and it has no other defense to get you to move your foot---but then, the cat will run from you as soon as it is free
  8. SOME feral cats bite, because they are SO afraid.
