Any dog that has been bred for hunting has the potential to view small mammals as prey

• If you did there would likely be an initial awkward period as the two are instinctively inclined to be enemies. However in time they would probably be able to get used to each other and even be friends. This is not a certainty however.

• That would depend on the dog, maybe if the dog grew up around other animals. The dachshund is bred for hunting rabbits/hares, so it could possibly start to hunt the ferret. I would keep their time together supervised.

Alternate answerIt has been my experience that ferrets naturally try to climb onto dog's mouths. Typically, a larger family dog will tolerate this and it won't be a problem. Dachshunds typically have smaller mouths that can't comfortably fit a ferret's curious exploring head. The dachshund will probably back away and then bark at the ferret. The barking can be annoying. It may be necessary to teach the ferrets not to put their heads inside the mouths of smaller dogs.
