The stems, leaves and seeds are considered toxic to dogs, particularly when the leaves are wilting. The plum plant (and its related cousins, apricots and peaches) can cause cyanide poisoning.

If your dog eats a plum pit, you should watch carefully for signs of intoxication: brick-red gums and membranes around the eye, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing and panting. If you see any of these signs, you need to take your dog to a veterinarian immediately and tell the vet your dog ate a plum pit.
