Believe it or not, earthquakes (EQs) in the seabed can generate noises as loud as a nuclear explosion. They are very dangerous to marine mammals and are no doubt the cause of whale and dolphin mass beachings for millions of years.

The stress in the seabed usually builds up slowing before the main shock occurs. This is called EQ preparation. There are many micro EQs during this stage. These micro events give off high frequency noise that cetaceans should be able to detect; however, not all EQs are preceded by detectable micro events.
