Gerbils can squeak but usually not on their own. ( Unless he's frustrated or playing with another gerbil.) If you are trying to pick him up with one hand, using your third and thumb to curl around his belly, he might squeak to say 'Stop that!' or 'I'm not comfortable.' Gerbils that are kept in pairs and are happy may 'sing'. Singing is basically the same as squeaking. So yes gerbils can squeak.
