First, check with the airline. I have seen cats on planes, but usually they are hidden in a large bag. If allowed, your guinea pig will need to be in a pet carrier that fits under the seat. Make sure it is not something that it can chew its way out of. Probably the best thing is as the answer above: leave it home.

Taking a gerbil on a plane is possible, but you have to take some precautions. Make sure that your airline allows pets because some only allow cats and dogs, and some don't allow pets at all. It would be quite costly to take him and you would have to pay the same amount that you would for taking a dog or cat. Some airlines would require you to have a special cage so he doesn't escape and possibly chew a wire while the plane is in the air. You would also have to decide if you wanted to take him with you under your seat, or if you wanted him where they keep all of the other pets. Some airlines wont allow you to bring him on board and require him to be in the pet chamber. The pet chamber has a regulated tempetature so you wont have to worry about him getting to cold, as he might on board with you. If you take him, make sure he has a good supply of food and water so he doesn't get dehydrated. You might also want to have his old bedding because it has his sent on it and it will be comforting

The only downside is the stress. obviously he will be internally stressed and the pressure might bother him as well as the noise of the engine that could badly damage his sensitive ears. Taking off and landing have been said to be the most difficult part in the trip for them. His age also matters. Since gerbil only live from 2-3 years, if hes older, the journey will be harder on him considering he is more fragile. All of these factors could possibly result in serious illnesses or even death.

You can bring some animals on some airplanes, provided you comply with the airline's restrictions. You shouldn't assume that you can bring any animal without checking with the airline first, and you should be aware that most of the time the animals are required to be properly caged and ride in the baggage compartment. A (recent) certificate of health from a veterinarian may be required. You will almost certainly have to pay an extra fee.

Be aware that the baggage compartment is an uncomfortable and scary place for most animals, and they can be subjected to high levels of stress from noise, temperature variations, air pressure variations, and being in unfamiliar surroundings away from their owner. If your pet is older or predisposed to be nervous, it's probably best that you do not fly with them.

In the US (and many but not all other countries), "service animals" are allowed to ride with their handler in the main cabin, and airlines are not allowed to charge an extra fee for this.

Just because you call an animal a "service animal" doesn't mean it is; you'll need to be able to prove it. Contact the airline for what constitutes "proof." There also may be some restrictions... the service animal must meet size guidelines, for example, so even if your mastiff IS a service animal, you're going to at the very least catch a lot of flak. It's normally expected that the animal will be of a size allowing it to ride at your feet without inconveniencing other passengers. Of course, if you have a large breed as your service animal, you're probably very used to this sort of problem. Also, even if the airline doesn't specifically require it, the animal should have a "uniform" (usually a solid-colored vest with patches) identifying it as a service animal so that other passengers don't give you a hard time.
