Because a hippo cannot jump, it can be confined by a ditch that it cannot either walk through or step over and by a fence that it either cannot step over or knock down. A full grown hippo has a hide that alone can weigh half a ton. (There are pygmy hippos that weigh only 400-600 pounds.) The problem with jumping is that the weight of the muscles needed for a jump would add so much to the basic weight that they would raise, again, in a never-ending cycle, the muscle mass needed for the jump. This problem of muscle mass versus needed strength is what prevents elephants from jumping, too. Adult hippos can't swim. This may seem odd since they do spend a lot of time in the water. They hold their breath well and are adapted in many ways for semiaquatic life. But they can't swim. In fact adult hippos can't even float, probably because they're too dense, and although they look fat, their percentage of fat is low.
