Can pit bulls be service dogs?

Not really, I have not heard of it. One of the problems with having a bulldog as a guide dog is that it has short legs, not like the lab or *GSD. Another is it has breathing problems. If you were a blind person, would you like to lose your guide early due to breathing problems? Most bulldogs have the problems. So, no, it is unlikely that the association will be entering bulldogs into the classes any time soon. *GSD=German Sheperd Dog

Guiding Eyes for the Blind breeds their dogs specifically for guide work, and train labradors, golden retrievers, and german shepherds. Pit-bulls are not usually trained as guide dogs, since they rarely have the mentality for it.
i believe so, the only thing is that the dog shouldn't have any history of attacks or anything like that. you should contact the seeing i- dog foundation.

Yes, they are great guard dogs. You don't have to train them to attack or anything though...it's against their nature. We haven't trained our dog to be a guard dog, but he does do a good job letting us know if someone is coming up the street or knocking on the door. He's all show and is fine once he knows this strange person is ok. I suggest loving your dog and he will feel part of your family. The rest just follows.

The Seeing Eye organization that operates in the US and Canada uses a wide variety of breeds that are trained as guide dogs, but not boxers. Other training institutions have trained boxers as guide dogs so yes, they can be trained. The only important question is if a dog (or the breed to which it belongs) has the right character and aptitude for the work. The fact that boxers are only occasionally selected and trained is probably an indication that - although most boxers are intelligent and even-tempered - other breeds are simply better suited for the work.
