Yes, but it will not be as effective. The dog will not be able to reproduce, but if the dog is a boy, he will not stop spraying things, nor will he stop humping your legs. I can't think of a reason it wouldn't be as effective on girls. I highly encourage you to get your dog/dogs spayed/neutered!

Humping and such is actually more behavioral. It is a dominance issue more than a hormonal. It can be broken with or without neutering. However, having a dog spayed or neutered can prevent other common problems. These include unwanted pregnancies and cancers of the reproductive system.

The first person to check with is your veterinarian. The basic answer is as soon as possible, preferably before her first heat. Your dog does not need to go into heat or have puppies for any kind of emotional reasons or fulfillment, and early spaying reduces her chances of getting cancer--as well as meaning you won't be presented with a litter of unwanted puppies.

Some places have low cost spay and neuter programs also. If you cannot afford a veterinarian's services, ask the vet about low-cost services in your community.

If he is a toy breed, like a min pin or a chahuahua, maybe. They mature faster than big dogs. If he is a bigger dog it's very unlikley.

well I think the ideal would be to sterilize it when it is about 1 year old as such, its reproductive organs are fully developed

If the reproductive parts cause it to go into heat, then yes, but do it between the times it goes into heat.
