Well giving it to them prior to founder won't do much to stop it setting in. What is best is to keep a close eye on the mini and start preventive measures. Keep the feet trimmed regularly, keep the horse off of fresh grass if it becomes a problem and provide low sugar content hay all the time, no grain's, but a commercial feed just for minis and ponies might be OK, lower the stress level. If the mini is foundering then a two time a day Epsom salt soaking can help relieve pain.
