That is not true at all. You can handle the pups right away. Some new mothers need help with the birthing process and they are comforted when you are there. I would see how she reacts first to them being handled by moving slowly and letting her smell and lick them as you handle them. Puppies need socializing with people as well as with each other. There are many reasons why you would have to handle them especially if the mother is not nursing or develops an underlying condition. So handle away!
