It is spread only between cats through prolonged contact (ex: sharing food bowls). It is feline specific so not contageous to humans, dogs, and other species. If you have cats that are both FeLV+ and - in the same household, vaccinate the negative ones. But it is better to keep them separate to be on safe side. Vets say these cats live 6 months to 2 years, but I have one who's 5 now.
