A small fawn was struck by a car during a rainstorm by my front driveway. I discovered it while walking my dog. The fawn had been dead for a hour. Nearby, just in the darkness, about 100 feet from the street, stood two does and another fawn. I had watched the 2 does and 2 fawns all summer. My impression is that the two does were standing vigil. Waiting for the fawn to move. The other possibility is that they were mourning the fawn. They recognized me and watched me. I spoke to them and they did not startle or run. It was an eerie thought that they were mourning the dead fawn. The night was silent and they did not make any sounds that I could hear. * In my experience, all animals mourn for their dead. I have seen birds, dogs, cats, and raccoons do it. It is heartbreaking to witness.
