Elephants have a gestation period of 20-22 months, that means they are pregnant for almost 2 years! After the calf is born, the mother (and a few other young female babysitter-elephants) help nurture, feed, care for, love, caress, and teach the baby elephant life lessons - for up to ten years!
Only Once the elephant reaches maturity (13 for females 15 for males) will they leave. The female usually stays with her family or finds another herd, the male will most likely leave but they will not be alone- Elephants are social animals and need groups in order to survive.
Female elephants (cows) live in herds while the male elephants (bulls) leave the herd after several years and travel alone
they will stay with it for about 4 days then if it doesn't get up they will leave it
