The breed was created by crossing St. John's water dogs with various other breeds such as the Newfoundland dog and possibly the Irish Setter. These original dogs were skilled at retrieving game for hunters and fishermen, eventually leading to the development of the modern Labrador Retriever breed known for its intelligence, loyalty, and friendly demeanor.
