No, actually it's the opposite. A pony will cost about the same to buy, but afterwards they typically cost less to keep. As a general rule ponies eat less food so you can save money that way so long as you're feeding the pony properly. Ponies also tend to have stronger hooves and may not require shoes at all, even if they show, this also can save money. You'll need less shampoo, fly spray and other things like that due to their smaller size. You may have to spend a bit more on tack so that it fits properly though and if you show you must pay the same amount of money that someone with a full sized horse would pay. If you board the owner may or may not give you a discount on board fees due to a pony's smaller size.
