Do porcupines have babies

They give birth to the young with the spines fully developed, whether it hurts or not, ask a porcupine.

The young porcupine's quills are soft at birth but harden within the first half hour after birth. I would imagine that natural child birth does not come without some pain, but the pain for the porcupine is not cause by the quills.

Porcupines are mammals. All mammals have live births except the Platypus and Echidnas. They belong to a special order of Mammals- the Monotremes- and they lay eggs. Echidnas do happen to look like porcupines, but they are not the same.

The babies aren't born with long, sharp quills but are born with short, blunt and bendable ones. The quills harden after a few days.

If you mean "make babies", the answer is "carefully" :-)

They mate "doggie-style" with the male mounting the female just like most any land-living mammals.

Video in related links Besides which, the porcupine's quills grow in a backwards direction from front to back and lay flat against the body unless the porcupine has some reason to be defensive. So a mother porcupine giving head first vaginal birth to her young would have no problem....the quills just lie tightly against the baby's body. Think about it.

The Spines aren't fully developed and feel like rubber spikes. After about 2 weeks the spikes get harder.
