It is never easy to euthanize an animal, particularly one that you have treated for the last decade from its first puppy shots to setting its broken leg to monitoring and managing its Diabetes. Most veterinarians learn to maintain a small amount of emotional distance from their patients for this reason - it makes it a little easier to be objective and provide a realistic prognosis when the worst happens. However, there are always patients that sneak into your heart and are gut-wrenching to say goodbye to.
Veterinarians can euthanize dogs, but your question is not complete.
take care of animals depending of course what type of vet you are, own a buisness, pay vet tech, preform surgeries, and sometimes board animals.
yes

aproximately 1,654,545,000,000, animals a year die from animal cruelty
animal shelters try their best not to put animals down due to overcrowding. I have never heard of any shelter putting animals down for this reason, if they have too many they put good home wanted notices in papers and the internet. But, Depending where you are....They do put them down alot due to overcrowding.......Where i live,They put alot down each week.....I have to agree of what they should do....Put notices up...But most shelters just put them down...Its really truly sad :(
Animal Hospitals try all they can to help the animals. If they can't help the animal they have to put it down if it is very serious.
