It is highly recommended to get two sugar gliders. The reasoning is that sugar gliders are colony creatures, and therefore do better when they have another glider friend. In fact -- sugar gliders that are kept as singles often self mutilate, overeat (or under eat -- neither are healthy), and/or over groom. It is also very commonly observed that single sugar gliders groom less, are less active, meaner, and less healthy than sugar gliders that are kept with a companion.

You should also realize that keeping two sugar gliders is no harder than keeping one... It's actually a lot more fun to have two!
