Not only do I like them because they are our main food source but they are gentle animals that have great personalities, I like them because some can be a challenge and when working with them you never know what your day is going to be like.

In today's world, it's not as important to hot- or freeze-brand cattle as it was 200 years ago. But, primarily, branding is used as a source of identification: a way of telling a cattleman, or ranch hand who's cattle is who's. Back in the Old West fences were non-existent, which meant cattle could wander wherever they pleased and mingle with cattle of other ranches. When it came time to round up these cattle, the brands told the cow hands which cattle belonged to which ranch, and sorted and divided them accordingly. Though the process of actually branding cattle is painful (to the animals that are having it done to them), the reason branding is used is far more effective than any other method could ever be.
