Although there is still some controversy, most experts believe The Shire to be the largest horse breed. The Shire originated in England around the 16th century. Stallions can be black, bay or gray. Mares and geldings can be black, bay, gray or roan. Mares are usually 17.2 hh and stallions and geldings are above 17.2 and sometimes up 19 hh. The record holder for height was a 19th century Shire named Mammoth who stood at 21.2 hh.
