No one knows for sure since we were not around back then but there is a great book called "Man Meets Dog" by Konrad Lorenz in 1953 in which he discusses the origin of the dog/human relationship. His theory is that all dogs originated from either wolves or jackals and that many of the characteristics of our current dogs can be traced back to those origins. The main thread seems to be that jackal based breeds are more doting and wolf based breeds are more independent and aloof.
