Kittens love empty toilet paper rolls; just make sure that their heads are bigger than the opening and they can't get stuck. Try any kind of dangling toys (feathers, etc.), plastic balls, but don't leave kittens alone with any toys. Supervise their play at all times.

Do NOT use yarn as a toy for kittens or cats. Yarn can be swallowed and can choke and / or obstruct.

Do NOT use your hands for toys. This teaches kittens that it's okay to play with human hands, and as they get older, OUCH!

Kittens do not respond to catnip, so don't give them catnip until they're older.

Get a 4-ft. length of thin but strong braided cording and tie one end to a thick rubber band. The band is your handle. Now drag this "snake" across the floor, flip it a few times, and watch kitty go after it. Be sure to let your cat have the satisfaction of catching it every few times for a moment or two before you flip it out of reach again.

Another thing to do is give kitty a "car wash" massage; using both hands rapidly stroke kitty from shoulders to tail, first one hand then the other- many times, while pressing kitty slightly towards the floor until kitty manages to get away. Cat will act miffed at first but will feel so refreshed from the massage, will love you for it.

Get salmon flavored cat treats and hold 5 treats in your hand, just out of cat's reach but close enough to smell how good they are. Cat will paw on your legs to get itself tall enough to reach your hand. Give one treat. Tempt cat again but this time hold your hand in front of you so kitty cannot use your leg as a steady post for reaching the treat. Kitty has to stretch up in the air to reach your hand, give it a reward for that effort. Next day make kitty put a paw on your hand that has the treats inside it, all the while your hand is held just in front of you. As soon as your hand is touched, exclaim "good kitty!" as a praise sound, and release the treat into a dish. From now on kitty will touch your hand with its paw whenever you have a treat in your hand. My 14 year old cat learned this, yours can, too.
