The antlers of the Irish elk were absolutely amazingly huge, much wider spanning and longer than any species of deer or member of the deer family existing today. On average, a bull Irish elk's antlers were found to have a span that was at least 10 to 12 feet in length, or the span of two men laying end-to-end to each other.
Female elk don't have antlers.
Irish elk are matched to weigh about the same as today's moose. This means that the Irish elk (excluding the ~88 lb antlers) likely weighed around 1400 to 1600 lbs.
Yes, elk have antlers.
Elani Gonzalez is SEXY
Scientists believe that it was the large antlers that were this species' demise. The size of the antlers were selected based on sexual preferences by the cows for bulls with larger antlers. Eventually the antlers became so unweildly and heavy that these deer could not go about normal business of life without the antlers interfering in some significant way. im not sure how many animals are extinct but the IRISH ELK is extinct....because its massive antlers got caught in trees and bushes and they were then stuck

Yes! A very large set of antlers on a moose could measure over 6 feet wide and weigh as much as 50 lbs, but any bigger and the antlers could cause problems. Animals with enlarged antlers, such as the three meter antlers of the Irish elk (an ice age inhabitant of Europe and Asia and a close relative to the moose) evolved antlers reaching 3 meters across and weighing 40 kg---too big for the animals' own good. It is believed the burdensome bulk on their heads was a contributor to the extinction of the species.
