How can you tell if a pit bull is mixed or purebred?

Without registration papers from an honest, reputable breeder, you will never be able to tell for certain. I would also like to add that there is no such thing as a purebred "pitbull." The closest breed would be the American Pit Bull Terrier, which would have registration papers from the UKC or the ADBA.

if it is from the pound it is doubtful but maybe if it is from a puppy mill ( which i strongly disprove of buying from they mistreat there breading dogs and the litters) than they are most likely purebred and if from pet store it is most likely purebred and if a stray street dog you can never be certain if from a certified breeder than definitely yes pure all the way and if not you got scammed by the breeder. Ok. A purebred must have a white chest, at least one white paw, some white on their head, and face. This is from one of their descendant's, the white terrier, which is extinct now. But, just because they have these required markings, does not mean that they are pure. These are just required to be pure. If they are a mix, they may have all of these things, if the pit, is the dominant gene. I can tell by glance if they are, or not. And, as puppies, they

You can tell if your American Pit Bull Terrier is a purebred if it has papers from a reputable kennel club or pedigree service. Otherwise, you'll have to look up the standard from www.ukc.org (as the American Pit Bull Terrier is not an AKC recognized breed) and compare and contrast your dog to it. You can also buy a DNA kit from wisdompanel.com, although it could be costly. You could also have a reputable breeder or your vet look your dog over. It doesn't really matter if your dog is a purebreed though, as long as it gives you love and makes you happy, that's all you need. :)

You can only know by reviewing your dogs pedigree. Even then, there can be misleading information unless you go to an honest, reputable breeder. Almost everyone now-a-days are breeding "pit-bulls" that are way out of breed standard and are not from good lines.

If his papers were available upon purchase, then obviously you'll know. However, if his papers were not provided he is likely a mix, or comes from a back yard breeder, and those lines aren't trusted to be clean. Many Pit bull lines have different bully breeds mixed in somewhere, so it is very hard to tell these days which 'pit bulls' are of true APBT lineage and which are mixed mutts. I suggest you ask the person that you got him from, if there is one.
