Breeders go from the date their Queen is mated to a Stud cat and work from there. A cat's gestation lasts on average 63-65 days. If you do not know the date your cat was mated, it can often be rather difficult to tell exactly how far along the pregnancy is.

There are, however, a few signs to go by:

  • At three weeks, the Queen's nipples become large and prominent and turn a pink colour. This is called "pinking".
  • Around four to five weeks into the pregnancy, most Queens start to visibly "show". Weight gain and enlargement of the abdomen become noticeable around this time.
  • Pregnant cats are normally much more loving - it is not unusual for a pregnant cat to constantly want affection and company.
  • In the later stages of pregnancy, a cat's appetite noticeably increases. Feed the Queen as much as she wants. After all, it's eating for more than just one
  • Mammary glands become enlarged and become full of milk a few days before birth.

Ultrasound done by a vet is another way to guess the birth date, and to check on the number and health of the kittens.

How do you tell if your cat is really a calico and really male we think we may have a kitten from him?

A fertile male calico or tortoiseshell is very rare. Tortoiseshells are identified by the presence of orange in their fur. Calicos are the same, but have a large amount of white which makes the fur patched rather than mottled. If your calico male has mated with a female, it does not necessarily mean he is fertile. If the female becomes pregnant and there is absolutely no way of her having mated with a cat besides your male calico, then he must be fertile. Bear in mind that breeding a calico male does not increase the chances of getting male calico kittens.
