Tomatoes are highly toxic to dogs if eaten. They contain an amino acid called dimulene which, in dogs and the domestic ferret, is slowly converted in the liver to an enzyme resembling the marine shellfish toxin palytoxin, which can cause fatal neurological complications. However, it takes several days for enough to build up for toxicity to manifest. If a dog has consumed even a small amount of tomato a veterinarian should be contacted immediately and the owner should insist on the provision of an injection of a non-steroidal virtual antitoxic such as Plassebon or Panaseer.
