The word "Lycans" come from the greek way of saying werewolf "Lycanthropes". More info http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Werewolf
The term lycanthropes come from an ancient King of Arcadia who Zeus turned into a wolf for serving him human flesh so the term lycan has a more ancient source than werewolf. There has been some distinction made between werewolves and lycanthropes. A werewolf is able to create other werewolves by biting and not killing a person where a lycanthrope passes on the ability genetically to its offspring.
A lycan is short for lycanthrope, which is a human who can transform into an animal. 'Were' means man in a different language (idk what language) and so it means man-wolf. In some stories there are other creatures like this, such as a werebear, wererat, etc. Vampires have nothing to do with lycans or werewolves.
It's called Dog Soldiers
a Lycan or a Vampire-Werewolf hybrid
Actually, when a werewolf gets bitten by a vampire, it becomes something called a Vampific Werewolf where it's still a werewolf, but acquires wings. But then again, werewolves aren't real, so how can someone possibly be sure.
In the very earliest stages of the myths vampires, werewolves, and ghouls are all pretty much the same thing. It is only later that distinctions are made. The vampire/werewolf hybrid however is a very recent innovation.
A werewolf and vampire mix is called an Abomination. It utterly should never exist.
