The eastern cougar became extinct for the most part by settlers clearing the land and killing the cougars because not only did the cat represent a threat to the livestock, but was perceived as a threat to humans as well. The eastern cougar is, however, not quite extinct. A remnant population exists in the swamps of south Florida, known as the "Florida panther".
