They are just doing their thing naturally, they did not realize it was a " position " .
Perhaps the position was thought up by watching cats.
Female cats produce a special hormone when they are in estrus to let the male know they are ready to mate. In essence, this mating position is an advertisement to male cats that they are in heat and ready to mate.

When the superior iliac crest of the pelvis moves forward and downward from the normal anatomical position, it is known as an anterior pelvic tilt. This can lead to changes in posture and alignment of the spine, potentially causing lower back pain or discomfort. Exercises focusing on core strengthening and stretching can help address this issue.
Mating in cats, also known as copulation, involves a series of behaviors and physiological responses. It typically begins with the female cat assuming a crouching position to signal receptivity, known as lordosis. The male cat will then mount the female and use his barbed penis to stimulate ovulation. Once copulation is complete, the male may exhibit a behavior called the copulatory lock, where the male's penis swells and remains inside the female for a period of time to ensure successful insemination.

They don`t acually have to know eachother. When my cat mated, a male cat just turned up, I had never seen it before, and they mated out in the garden. If two different gender cats have been together for a long time and they`re both adults without mating, they or one of them might be sterilized. If not I dont know why they would wait.
Male cats may exhibit protective behaviors towards female cats, especially during mating or when defending their territory. However, the level of protection can vary depending on the individual cat and the specific circumstances.
