The Black-footed Ferret (Mustela nigripes) is a small carnivorous North American mammal closely related to the Steppe Polecat of Russia, and a member of the diverse family Mustelidae which also includes weasels, mink, polecats, martens, otters, and badgers. It should not be confused with the domesticated ferret. They are nocturnal hunters that require a plentiful supply of prairie dogs for prey. Though they will also eat other small mammals, birds, and insects, a single family of four Black-footed Ferrets eats about 250 prairie dogs each year and cannot survive without access to large colonies of them. Typically a prairie dog colony 125 acres (50 ha) in size will provide a sufficiently stable prey population for one adult ferret. The ferrets are entirely dependent on the prairie dogs for their survival, and even shelter in prairie dog burrows during the day.

Black-footed ferrets is important to the environmentbecause they help control populations of prairie dogs, which are sometimes seen as pests because of their burrowing activities and because they as as reservoirs for zoonotic diseases such as bubonic plaque.

Because black footed ferrets at one time were thought to be extinct and are now being released through captive breeding programs back into the wild, they are not really able to help us. But in history, black footed ferrets help control and reduce the population of prairie dogs, which is their main prey. In the 1800's, when ranching took over the prairie lands, prairie dogs were perceived to be pests and were exterminated, poisoned and eradicated heavily for many years by the government and ranchers. Extermination of prairie dogs by humans has totaled in the millions, which is the main cause of the black footed ferrets demise.

The black footed ferret indirectly became endangered because their main food or prey - the prairie dog was subject to massive extermination by the government and rancher in the early 1900's. Prairie dogs were exterminated, poisoned and killed by the millions. The prairie dog is considered nuisance and ranchers viewed them as potential problems for cattle or horses being injured by stepping into prairie dog holes or burrows. Which is a big lie - there has not been one documented case of cattle or horse being injured by stepping into a prairie dog burrow or hole. Prairie dogs are beneficial for the land and their activity helps aerate the grassland to grow.
