How do labrador retrievers adapt for winter?

Water resistance is the key. Labradors have a double coat. The initial coat is a warm, fluffy undercoat. On top of that is a slick oily coat that deflects most water. Nevertheless, Labradors should not be allowed in cold water for very long to prevent hypothermia.

labs have water resistant coats (like ducks only with fur instad of feathers) so there skin dosent usually actually get wet, they were bred to be this way, from the Newfoundland they needed smaller water dogs and thus the retriever.....

They actually adapt awesome. You would think by the way their fur looks and feels they'd be freezing but really, they're fine. Labs can swim in about 5 degree water for about 30 seconds so of course they're fine in the snow and all. The only down side is that their pads are very sensitive and they, like, burn basically if they're standing on the snow for too long. Hope this helps :)
