In the insect world they use a lot of pheromones in order to attract their opposite sex.
When you look closely on a butterfly, they do have some large antennas on their head. These antennas are used in addition to balance, also to get the scent of "things", hereby also the partner.
It is also thought that butterflies and other insects are sensitive of other wavelengths of light than what is visible to us humans.
Using special light-spectrum recording instruments we can capture different wavelengths reflected by these insects. Some look really quite amazing, and it is also thought that these patterns of "colors" not visible to man, play a role.
I would suggest a combination of both Pheromones and vivid colors not visible to the human eye. Pheromones for the long distance "phone call" (the male can sense the female pheromones from up to 2 kilometers away. Some moths can even sense their female as far away as 5 kilometers) and possibly colors when they are homed in.
Science is scarce regarding the aspect of different wave lengths of light. Science have started exploring this issue and this leads me to believe that many a book will in turn have to have added information to them in order to be 100% correct.

Their probably mating.
they go to each other and smell them with there antennas .....lier that's not even it I would tell u ppl but I have skool so byee
they have a special call they use
Monarch butterflies find a mate primarily through visual cues and pheromones. Males actively search for females during the breeding season, using their keen eyesight to spot potential mates. Once a male locates a female, he will perform aerial displays to attract her attention. If the female is receptive, they engage in a courtship ritual before mating.

Butterflies typically find their food sources in flowers, where they feed on nectar.
Butterflies find a mate through visual cues, colors, patterns, and behaviors. Males often use pheromones to attract females, while some species engage in elaborate courtship dances or flights to impress a potential mate. Communication through these signals helps butterflies find and attract suitable partners for mating.
Wikipedia would be a good place for someone to find information on the phylogeny of butterflies. Wikipedia is a free encyclopedia with wonderful information on butterflies.
Monarch butterflies use their keen sense of smell to detect chemicals emitted by the swan plants. These chemicals act as attractants and help guide the butterflies to the plants where they can lay their eggs. Additionally, monarch butterflies have a natural instinct to search for specific host plants like swan plants for egg-laying.

There is no reason why not, just make sure that the introduction goes well be introducing the two dogs to each other in neutral territory, such as a local park.
