How do you change oil in John Deere GX85 lawn mover?

Make sure the fuel tank is at least half empty before changing oil. 1. Run engine at least five minutes to warm up oil. 2. Stop engine and disconnect spark plug wire. 3. Remove dipstick. 4. Place drain pan on the left side of the mower. 5. Turn mower onto its left side so the fuel tank opening is at the highest point. 6. Drain oil fromthe dipstick filler tube into the drain pan. 7. After oil has drained, return mower to upright position and clean around dipstick filler tube. 8. Add oil through dipstick filler tube. Check oil until level is at FULL mark on dipstick. On the lower portion of the left side of the engine you'll find a long pipe with a threaded pipe plug cap on the end. That's the oil drain pipe. Remove the plug cap with an adjustable wrench (use a pair of channel locks on the pipe itself if it starts to un-thread from the motor). Drain out the old oil and replace the pipe plug. The oil filter is right next to it (looks kinda like a an inverted pregnant Orange Juice can). The oil filter base has one or two threaded plugs in it. Remove the lower one and let the oil filter drain out then reinsert the plug. Unscrew the oil filter using a strap wrench and replace it with a new one. Make certain that the inner surface of the filter base is clean and that the rubber seal from the old filter didn't stick to it (if it did, peel it off and toss it out with the old filter). Lubricate the rubber seal on the new filter with some fresh oil and screw it down in place (typically tighten it 1/2 to 3/4 of a turn after the rubber seal touches the housing. Fill with fresh oil at the dipstick tube opening (usually 1.75 quarts with a filter change). Re-insert the dipstick, check to confirm the oil level and you're done! 30 minutes including clean-up. No sweat!

turn the spout cap, located on the bottom of the engine on the right side. The spout projects horizontally from the bottom of the engine with a black cap on the end. Be ready with the funnel and container when the cap comes off the oil will flow! and for goodness sake make sure the engine is cool because it will get on your hands. When filling the oil, keep a check on the volume. turn the mower over a few times and check the oil after you have received a full reading, this can sometimes be wrong. I over filled my crankcase by 1/2 quart by not cycling the oil thru after filling. Good Luck.
