The best way is to starve the dog for 12-24 hours (depending on size - always provide fresh water), then feed a bland diet of ONE lean protein source and ONE carbohydrate source until the diarrhoea resolves. Examples would be lean chicken and rice, white fish and potato. Whichever you choose, feed ONLY this for 24-48 hours.
If the diarrhoea has not resolved, if you see any blood, or the animal is not well in his/herself - ALWAYS go see your vet. If the dog is very young or old, you should visit the vet immediately, as diarrhoea can be fatal in these animals.
If the diarrhoea resolves, change back to normal food over a few days, mixing it in with the bland diet gradually. If the problem comes back when you do this go back to a bland diet and make an appointment to see a vet. NEVER give any human products without veterinary advice, especially not painkillers.
If the diarrhoea has started after introducing a new type of food, your pet may have an intolerance to something in that food, and you may need to try another diet. Call your vet for advice ifyou need to discuss these types of problems.
