Cats are feral animals and, although you can have one in your home, you can never truly own or tame one. Cats don't "submit" to human demands but they do respond to affection and almost always to food.

While cats are notorious for doing what they want when they want, they can, in fact, be taught to do certain things which are common behaviors for them, anyway. To train a cat to sit up, for example, you can dangle her favorite "swat" toy above her head until she sits up, then immediately give her a treat and praise. Over time, just reduce the number of times you use the toy, and substitute your hand instead. In time, when you give her the signal, she will sit up pretty as you please. Keep up the rewards, or she'll lose interest eventually.
