Poodles can be rather vocal dogs. The first thing to do is to teach your dog to speak on command. Once they learn the "Speak" command, you can teach then the "Quiet" command.

Be persistent and consistent. Have regular training sessions rather than waiting until you are dealing with visitors AND a barking dog. Praise your dog for being quiet in any situation where they would normally be barking, saying "Good Quiet".

You can also try walking away and ignoring them when they bark - your reaction may actually be encouraging the noise inadvertently. And make sure visitors do the same.

When your puppy is barking, distract it. As in, don't say 'No!,' 'Be quiet!,' 'Shhhh!!' or 'Bad dog!.' Because obviously, dogs don't know the language of humans. But, you can make funny, strange and loud noises to distract your dog. And when your dog has done the right thing, praise it.

The majority of dogs crave attention and anything is attention to them, so i't important that you don't just scold your dog, because that could mean attention to them.

And also- if your puppy is barking or howling at night, all you need to do is ignore it. It seems very neglecting but it's really not. Your puppy is barking because it wants attention, and thats why you should ignore it so that it realizes there is no point in waking you up. I did it myself and it worked on my puppy!

If you decide to come to it at night, and pet it and try to calm it down. It will keep barking at night, so I recommend you not to do that.
